We were in Galveston, Texas, the weekend of September 10th and happened to catch a surfing tournament being held next to the 43rd Street jetties.
Everyone participating in the 6th Annual Ashlyn Shoemaker Memorial Grom Roundup, as well as everyone watching, took advantage of a gorgeous Texas day. The tournament was limited to ages 13 and under and the competition was fierce.
The waves were small but rideable and the water was lacking the normal summertime brown color for which Galveston is famous.
Unfortunately, we didn't have our cameras with us since we didn't know the contest was being held but we managed to snag a bunch of photos using an iPhone. Forgive the quality but you make do with what you have.
We had to leave while the contest was still going but the folks at the Texas Gulf Surfing Association were nice enough to forward the results to us and you can see all the heat results at this PDF. document.
The top 4 in each category were:
Micro Groms
1st Place – Reef Ellison (with a name like this how could he not be a surfer)
2nd Place – Connor Kryger
3rd Place – Isabel Kryger
4th Place – Colin Thomas
Mini Groms
1st Place – Madison Smith
2nd Place – Aransas Blaha
3rd Place – Reese Kelly
4th Place – Jacob Columbo
Groms
1st Place – Jacob Columbo
2nd Place – Zane Spence
3rd Place – Emily Avard
4th Place – Mackenzie Cooke
Congrats to all the participants and particularly to the to the top 4 in each category
The contest was named after Ashlyn Leigh Shoemaker, a young lady who tragically died at age 14 on April 21, 2005 from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. You can read more about her and the Ashlyn Would Go Foundation at their website.
We're putting some pics from the event below and will be adding more to our gallery.
